The Story Behind the Origin of Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal is one of the most well-known monuments in the world. It is located in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, which was once the capital of the Mughal Kingdom. It is the most visited monument in India, attracting both domestic and foreign tourists. It is called by many names like seventh wonder of the world, timeless beauty and so. The most common name is the symbol of love and has a very interesting story behind it.

Taj Mahal is a great example of Mughal architecture, which is the combination of Persian, Turkish and Indian styles. During the seventeen century, the Mughal Empire in India was at its peak of prosperity. Shah Jahan was the emperor of the Mughal Empire at that time. But tragedy hit Shah’s life when his third and the most favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died giving birth to his 14th child on June 17, 1631. The grief-stricken Shah Jahan went into a very depressing state. He gave up his luxurious lifestyle.

In 1632, the construction of the Taj Mahal began after Shah Jahan gave the order to build a tomb to the memory of his loving wife and was completed in 1653. Shah Jahan took a keen interest in the construction of the Taj Mahal. It has the most beautiful architecture and design among all the Mughal monuments in India. The details on both outside and inside the Taj have a very high level of perfection. One has to take the Taj Mahal tour to see how beautiful this monument is.

Taj Mahal Gets a Lot of High Profile Visitors

I like traveling. It is a fun way to meet new people and to learn something new. This time I went to India to see an amazing thing called the Taj Mahal. It is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. There is no doubt about it. Only after seeing it with my very own two eyes, I realized how beautiful it is. Now I know why it is so famous and people from everywhere visit Agra to see it.
The huge crowd of local and foreigner tourists was enough to prove that Taj Mahal is the most visited place in India. I did a small research myself. I found that 2-3 million people visit Taj Mahal every year. I also found that the list of high-profile Indian and international celebrities visiting Taj Mahal has many big names. Every now and then, you can see a headline in the Indian media that a big international celebrity visited Taj Mahal. And it is all because this structure is second to no one in terms of beauty and class. It seems like Taj Mahal is the most favorite destinations when it comes to the Hollywood celebrities visiting India.

So what makes Taj Mahal such an attention grabbing magnet? Well, the reasons are numerous. The first one would be the craftsmanship done all over it. This white marble structure is as beautiful from the inside as from the outside. Flowers carved on white marbles and detailed work on the interior walls is simple mind-bogging. The history related to it is also amazing. From a local licensed guide and from my little research, I came to know that it is actually a tomb. Shah Jahan, a Mughal Emperor, ordered to build this monument in the memory of his third and favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. She died during the birth of their 14th child. It took more than 21 years to complete structure. And that is why it is called the symbol of love. The bottom line is that it is a fascinating structure and is definitely worth a trip.

Taj Mahotsav Festivals Agra

Agra is mostly famous for two things, “Agra ka petha” a sweet translucent soft candy and the majestic eternal beauty called “Taj Mahal -”. And to praise this monument of love, an event called “Taj Mahotsav (Taj Jubilee)” is held annually at Shilpgram in February by the state government of Uttar Pradesh. It’s a 10 day event which starts from 18th of February and lasts till 27th of February. It is a great time to have a holiday tour to Agra.

The Taj Mahotsav festival allows craftsman and artists from all over India to showcase the exquisite works of art. Wood/stone carvings, Paper mash work, Bamboo/cane work, marble and zardozi work, brass wares, hand made shawls & carpets, Pottery, Chikan work, silk & zari work, hand printing and Kantha stitch work are some of the name of craftsmanship that are displayed in this festival. This festival also brings back the memories of the 18th and 19th century’s old Nawabi style and Mughal era.

The festival begins like a grand victory procession with decorated elephants and camels, drum beaters, trumpet players and folk dancers. Various classical & folk dancers and singers also add excellence to this festival. Tourists and travelers from all over India and around the world visit this festival to experience this grand event.

The Taj Mahotsav festival is celebrated with a theme or a message every year. The theme can be related to any present world situation or from great historical importance. The tourism in Agra is always at a high during every time of the year but it gets a great boom during this festival as both the domestic and international tourists come to visit the Taj Mahotsav festival.
